Kerry Armstrong appeared in court last week to enter a not guilty plea on behalf of his
client, Crawford High School teacher Toni Sutton. Sutton, 37, stands accused
of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student and now
faces 11 felony charges.
As NBC San Diego reports, Sutton was arrested earlier this month when the student's mother
came forward with claims that her son had a relationship with the Spanish
teacher and volleyball coach. According to police, seized text messages
indicate an ongoing, consensual relationship that occurred between summer
of last year and January 2016. Sutton has been charged two counts of a
lewd act on a child 14 or 15 years old, six counts of statutory rape,
two counts of oral copulation with a person under 18 years old, and one
count of sodomy of a person under 18.
Following the recent arraignment, Attorney Armstrong adamantly defended
Sutton's character and the ramifications of the allegations. "She's
been a teacher for 11 years," he told the press. "She started
being a teacher in West Virginia, where she grew up, and teaching is her
life. And obviously, no matter what happens in this case, that's over.
She'll never be a teacher again with allegations like this, even if
we win this case so, she's heartbroken, she really is."
"Persona Doesn't Fit the Charges"
Sutton's charges have already reached international attention, including in the
Daily News. The involved student also has anonymously

the charges are baseless and that Sutton is not capable of such a litany
of offenses. "I'm telling you, she's very religious. She
goes to church every Sunday," Attorney Armstrong said. "She's
never been in trouble. She's the kindest, most laid back and gentle
person you'll ever meet. My point is, her persona does not fight the
If convicted, Sutton faces nearly a decade in prison. Attorney Armstrong
will continue to helm a robust defense in her favor for the remainder
of her trial.
