Sixteen people were arrested under the suspicion of drunk driving in San
Diego County this weekend,
10News reports. The arrests were made at three DUI checkpoints in Mission Bay, Imperial
Beach, and National City. In total, nearly 3,500 vehicles passed through
the checkpoints between 6:00 pm on Friday and 3:00 am on Saturday.
In the eyes of law enforcement, this massive undertaking was a success.
In addition to the 16
DUI arrests, 18 cars were impounded and 37 citations were issued. However, this flurry
of activity may have decreased the effectiveness of the DUI screenings.
What to Expect at a DUI Checkpoint
When you pass through a DUI checkpoint, you are typically asked a few routine
questions about your recent alcohol consumption. If officers suspect you
of DUI, they will ask you to perform
field sobriety tests to determine your level of intoxication. While field sobriety tests are
generally helpful, they are not infallible. Innocent drivers are often
implicated for performing poorly. Many factors other than intoxication
can hinder a driver’s ability to execute field sobriety tests:
- Fatigue or anxiety
- Improper footwear
- Unclear or incorrect directions from officer
When a large-scale screening like the one on Friday takes place, the possibility
for error is dramatically increased.

Officers pinpoint the late evening to early morning hours because that
is when people are statistically more likely to be driving under the influence.
While that may be true, this time frame is also when drivers are most
likely to be fatigued. Female drivers may be wearing shoes that are difficult
to walk in. Officers, wanting to move quickly, may hastily administer
field sobriety tests. All of these elements reduce the effectiveness of
DUI checkpoints, increasing the chance that an innocent driver is arrested.
