Every year, law enforcement agencies prepare themselves for a spike in
DUI activity over Labor Day weekend. Now that Labor Day 2015 has passed,
the numbers are in and California has broken its previous 2014 record
for the number of DUI arrests reported over the three-day weekend.
According to San Diego 6, there were 1,094 DUI arrests made in California over the Labor Day weekend.
News radio station
600 KOGO also reports that last year's total of 1,043 was surpassed by the end of Sunday
night, when 1,049 statewide arrests had already been reported.
San Diego County did slightly better this Labor Day weekend from last when
it came to DUI arrests. 2014 saw 72 San Diego County DUI arrests. This
year, 71 arrests were made.
Statewide Improvement in DUI-Related Deaths
The California Highway Patrol also announced that there were fewer DUI-related
deaths this year than last: 2014 saw 23 California DUI deaths. This year,
there were 17. Of the 2015 victims were two motorcyclists, a bicyclist,
and a pedestrian.
There were also deadly accidents in San Diego County, as well. While there
were no local DUI crash-related fatalities in 2014, this year there were
two. Both were killed due to a motor vehicle collision.
Increased Vigilance During Holiday Weekends
Law enforcement is getting better and more efficient at identifying and
stopping drunk drivers over holiday weekends and Labor Day 2015 was no
exception. Along with robust patrolling, sobriety checkpoints have become
an extremely effective way for finding suspected offenders and getting
them off the road.
