Attorney Kerry Armstrong is providing defense representation for Christopher Hays, a former San
Diego Police Department officer who is charged with felony false imprisonment
and misdemeanor sexual battery. Eight alleged victims have claimed that
Mr. Hays sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them while he was on
duty, though only four of the professed victims are named in the criminal
Attorney Armstrong's client is a former Marine and married father who
had served with the SDPD for four years before his arrest in February.
He resigned from the SDPD shortly after being arrested. Attorney Armstrong
said that his client resigned because, "He's extremely upset
with the police department for not backing him in this case, and it's
really hurt him. He's very upset about it, and he thinks that his
career in law enforcement is over because of these allegations."
The four women named in the complaint allege that Mr. Hays victimized them
between October and December of 2013. After local news outlets began covering
the case, four other women came forward claiming that the former officer
victimized them as well. Many of the alleged victims have criminal records,
and Attorney Armstrong has suggested that some of women accusing his client
may only be after money.
At the preliminary hearing, Attorney Armstrong contended that the women's
stories don't make sense and that these purported victims lack credibility.
Mr. Hays is scheduled to be in court for arraignment on May 7. He has
plead Not Guilty to all charges and steadfastly denies the allegations
made against him.
The case is being covered by a number of local news outlets, including
UT San Diego, ABC 10News, CBS 8, NBC 7 San Diego, Fox 5, AM 760 KFMB,
and KUSI News.
